Professor Guido Grassi

Milan, June 23, 2022 – Prof. Guido Grassi has been appointed President of the European Society of Hypertension. Professor Grassi is Full Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Milan-Bicocca, Director of the Clinical Medical Department of the San Gerardo Hospital in Monza and Director of the Technical School of Internal Medicine. He is also coordinator of the Milan-Bicocca PhD in Public Health.

The new position, alongside that of President of the Italian Society of Arterial Hypertension, was conferred on him during the 31st Congress of the ESH, held in Athens from June 17th to 20th last year.

As part of his research activities, Prof. Grassi is the author of over 700 articles published in major international scientific journals. He has received prestigious awards for his professional work, including the 2007 Paul Korner Award, the 2009 Bjorn Folkow Award and the 2017 European Society of Hypertension Talaj Zein Award.

Established in 1982, ESH brings together European and Eastern European societies with the aim of spreading scientific knowledge about hypertension. Regularly updates the guidelines for the treatment of the disease.

“From the work of the Athens Congress, attended by 3,500 researchers and clinicians, it emerged that in many countries it is still not possible to control blood pressure, with all the serious consequences for the brain, coronary artery and kidneys that this entails.” , observes Prof. Fett. And he adds: “In many cases, it is necessary to take more than one drug to bring levels back to acceptable levels, and this increases the risk of side effects. Therefore, there is a tendency, both on the part of patients and on the part of physicians themselves, to limit the use of drugs, making it difficult to achieve the goal. That’s one of the aspects we need to work on.”

The new President Grassi comments on the appointment decided by the ESH Assembly: “What I have been awarded is a prestigious position, but at the same time it requires a lot of commitment. After two years of the pandemic emergency, we must work to intensify the scientific exchanges that existed before and to involve more and more researchers in the study of arterial hypertension and the relationship with the pathologies often associated with it.

“The appointment during the ESH Congress – stresses the Rector of the University of Milan-Bicocca, Giovanna Iannantuoni – represents an important confirmation of the quality of the work carried out by Prof. Dr. Fat. For Milano-Bicocca it is a source of pride to be able to contribute to these activities”.

“Prof. Grassi’s choice is further proof of the excellence of the Medical Clinic he directs at the San Gerardo Hospital in Monza. I congratulate him – adds the General Director of ASST Monza Silvano Casazza – for the important and prestigious position that he will hold and for the commitment and passion with which the professor directs our medical department. I offer my best wishes to the newly elected President for a job well done, knowing that during his tenure he will continue his commitment and also bring the experience of our hospital to Europe.”
